The Reply

"Jesus was a socialist" I heard a hippie say.
"Yes he was" I quick replied, "And rainbows oft are gray.
Snowy fields are burning hot and horses love to fly
Babies all play basketball and snoops don't love to pry.
Jesus was a socialist if words mean other things.
But Lenin's not an astronaut
And pigs still don't have wings."

i'm still looking for the biblical passage where Jesus calls upon the govt to redistribute other people's money.

whenever i hear that kind of hippie talk, usually thrown out by nonbelievers, i usually reply with something along the lines of "oh, you love Jesus too? let me tell about some of the other stuff he taught."

The text that they'll try to use is up in the lectionary this Sunday, Matthew 22:15-22, where Jesus tells the Pharisees to render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Getting socialism out of that is like trying to milk a bull, but they try.

they actually do milk bulls, and its similar to what the hippies are doing to the passage.

WB, knowing that many in your denomination (and the one I grew up in) attempt to shoehorn our Lord into the Worker's Weekly World, it would be fun to hear something from you regarding what you face. Maybe time to take a look at it on my site....

Bubba, for the moment what I would note is that there is a tremendous difference between the members of the churches I serve and the leadership of the ELCA. There is a huge disconnect. If this chasm were better understood I think many members would be shocked. But generally they are far more interested in what's going on around here: farming, sports, weather, funerals, etc...

Jesus wasn't a socialist, but he wasn't a capitalist either. Just sayin'

Rosalie, I wouldn't even bother to try to make that case. Jesus was clearly more interested in other things.
